Why Accountants Are Better Choices Then Lawyers: If you haven?t filed your taxes for years.
1. Lawyers are not Accountants: They just pass along your file to an Accountant for preparation and pile on their share of the fees.
2. Most Tax Matters Do Not Involve Tax Court: In all the tax returns I have filed under the Voluntary Disclosure Program; not one went to court.
3. Does Lawyer/Client Privilege Really Protect Me? CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) demands full disclosure; there is nothing a lawyer can do with that one.
4. Late Filing is not the Same as Voluntary Disclosure: Once an investigation has started you will not be approved under the voluntary disclosure. Based on experience; receiving one letter requesting you to file does not necessarily mean an investigation has started. Bottom line is; if an investigation has already been started, why use an expensive lawyer, just file your taxes through an accountant.
5. Tax Amnesty applications can ALWAYS be made on a ?no name? basis: Most of my clients do not follow this process however; if you are going to come forward and clear up the mess, then do it. By not following through under the ?no name? bases; you are still in a very bad situation that can only get worse. Again lawyers can?t help you with that scenario.
6. Tax Accountants Have Specialized Tax Software to go Back Decades; lawyers don?t: So why use lawyers?
