Outside Oshawa Area (View Map)

Carl Ray (Cree) was born and raised on the Sandy Lake reserve, the same place Norval Morrisseau and Joshim Kakegamic came from this the geographic birthplace of Woodlands School of Art. Carl was one of the first Native Artists to show the secret legends of the Cree People in his art. Towards the end of his life his focus grew more personal and reflected his own inner turmoil. He was the friend and apprentice to Norval Morrisseau, Objibway Shaman artist and together they painted large mural for the Canadian Government for the Native People of Canada Pavillion at Expo '67 in Montreal. Carl Ray had a unigue x-ray style of painting, often showing the inner organs and energy lines inside an animal or man and presented his subjects often in turmoil with the elements. To Ray's life was full of conflict and redemption.

Carl Ray was fatally stabbed at 35 years of age at Sioux Lookout in a domestic dispute in 1979. His only daughter Corinna carries on the art in her family adopting her fathers unigue x-ray style of art. This painting is an original and done on acid free paper and has been shrunk wrapped.
